One of the most anticipated events in Liverpool for 2018 has arrived, as the World Museum has welcomed China’s First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors.
The exhibition will be in the city until 28th October but tickets are already selling like gold dust so we recommend you get yours soon.
Here’s what you need to know about the army of life-sized warriors…
For over 2,000 years, an underground army of life-sized Terracotta Warriors secretly guarded the tomb of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, in Lintong District in the Shaanxi Province.
The army was discovered on 29th March 1974 by local farmers and the figures include warriors, chariots and horses.
Qin Shi Huang was the founder of the Qin dynasty and was the First Emperor of China. He became the Zheng, King of Qin when he was only 13 and then became the First Emperor when he was 38.
Qin Shi Huang had around 6,000 Terracotta Warriors built to protect him from evil spirits in the afterlife.
It’s reported he died from poisoning after taking mercury pills, which were ironically supposed to make him immortal.
Aswell as getting the chance to learn about the history of China over the past 1,000 years, you will also get to witness objects that have never been shown before in the UK, such as objects from museums and institutes from across Shaanxi Province.
One of the most interesting things about the Warriors is that each one is different and you can see how they were made according to their roles as Generals, Infantrymen, Officers, Charioteers or archers. Their height and uniform also determine what roles they played.
The figures were originally painted with bright colours such as: pink, red, green, blue, black, brown, white and lilac and despite the colour fading on a lot of them, it’s still visible on one of the warriors, the kneeling archer, even after all of these years.
