Floatation therapy, also know as sensory deprivation therapy is a unique experience that helps to remove any distractions and encourage mindfulness and meditation. As you may already know, meditation is an age-old practice which can take many forms, and is a great way of relieving stress but it’s not always easy to commit to being still- for several minutes. Floating therapy can help remove any distractions during meditation and help focus the mind.

Floatation therapy has been around for over 60 years and was first invented in the 1950s as part of scientific research carried out by neuroscientist Dr John C Lilly. Ground-breaking research carried out today records how floating effects the brain with measurable benefits on those suffering with debilitating anxiety, panic attacks and post traumatic stress disorder.

What Do I Need to Bring to Float?

You can wear a swimming costume during your float, or for ultimate floatation benefits, you can wear nothing at all. You will be given your own room with your float tank. The room can be locked, allowing you to get changed in private, take a shower and get into the pod. After your 60 minute session, you can take another shower to rinse off all the salt water and then get changed. We suggest bringing anything you’d usually need for a swim. For example, a towel, change of clothes, a bag for any wet items, make-up and deodorant.

What Happens During My Float?

You have full control of your own flotation pod. If you prefer to float with the lid open, you can. If you want to close the lid for ultimate sensory deprivation, you can. The water will not cover your face and as it is highly concentrated salt water, you are going to float and not sink, so you can put your head back and relax. Some people even sleep while floating.

You also have control of the lighting system. Feel free to change the colour or enjoy complete darkness while you relax. There is a button inside the pod to speak to the team at Float Planet Liverpool, should you have any questions or need any assistance. When your session begins, music will play, eventually stopping to encourage your mind to drift into a meditative state. When your session is almost finished, the music will return, bringing your mind back to the room or gently waking you up, if you’ve fallen asleep.

Don’t worry if you couldn’t meditate during your first float session. This is completely normal. After a couple of sessions, like meditation, you’ll gain more control of your mind and be able to focus more.  Practice makes perfect after all.

There are also no known side effects of floating and the Epsom salts used help your muscles to relax which reduces tension.

Are the Floatation Pods Clean?

Yes, the water in the pod is automatically filtered multiple times between each float, through a highly advanced 1-micron filtration system, which is an incredible 100 times smaller than a human hair. The high epsom salt content and disinfectant ensures that nothing harmful can survive within the tank.
