For many, the Shakespeare Pub has been a part of Liverpool’s furniture for years. Homely, cosy and welcoming, the pub serves tourists and regulars alike, every say of the week. Whilst all of the above still applies, the Shakespeare has undergone a slight makeover in recent months, re-vamping the upstairs dining room into a light and stylish space, complete with booth style seating and polished wood floors.
As well as a new sophisticated interior, the food menu has also undergone a change with hearty and traditional dishes such as scouse and chicken pie sitting alongside halloumi fries and falafel burgers – meaning there’s enough homemade grub to suit everyone, at more than reasonable prices.
We were greeted at the Shakespeare with a warm welcome and before we knew it we were ordering raspberry gin balloons – the perfect start to the evening. The Shakespeare menu has options for both breakfast and lunch as well as evening choices which included an array of starters. Wanting to try a bit of everything we ordered the halloumi fries and goats cheese bon bons off the starter menu – both of which were accompanied with a dip – halloumi fries with spicy mayo and the bon bons with a fruity jam. Delicious.
With it being national burger month we decided to choose from the Shakespeare’s fab selection of burgers: the buttermilk chicken with wasabi mayo and the delicious vegetarian falafel burger, both served with coleslaw and delicious, traditionally hand cut fries. Both burgers were served beautifully and tasted even better – soft brioche buns packed with delicious filling. The falafel was crispy on the outside and soft in the middle with the buttermilk chicken having a delightfully salty taste, offset perfectly with a punch of wasabi. Burger month done properly!
the dessert menu likened very much to the main course offerings – some traditional and some a little more creative. From ‘proper’ puddings such as wet nelly and bread and butter pudding to the delectable kinder bueno cheesecake and even scones with jam and clotted cream, there’s an endless choice to finish off your meal perfectly. After sharing starters and a huge burgers, we had no room left for dessert, but can’t wait to re-visit to taste them.
Whether you’re out shopping and want to stop for a quick, great quality pub lunch, are planning an evening meal before a night at the theatre or are planning a special occasion – the Shakespeare is the perfect choice, with something delicious to suit everyone and a gorgeous interior that’s perfected by amazing views of the city. The Shakespeare is also available for private hire, perfect for a big birthday or special event. Head over to the Shakespeare to try their amazing new menu ASAP!
