Mother’s Day afternoon tea at Liverpool Gin Distillery

Afternoon tea is a classic mother’s day activity, from finger sandwiches to delicious sweet treats and not forgetting the scones, it’s the perfect way to show your mum (or someone special) exactly how much she means to you. But what about if you add gin to an already delicious afternoon? Liverpool Gin Distillery has done just that and it’s the only place to be this Mother’s Day.

We were lucky enough to be invited down to try out the afternoon tea ahead of Sunday’s big event and, of course, we jumped at the chance. If you have already visited the gin distillery, you’ll be aware of just how much thought has gone into the amazing venue. It’s the perfect place for a special occasion and the ultimate setting for a super glam Mother’s Day treat. Arriving into the venue, our afternoon tea was set out beautifully on the table. Each guest had four tea cups containing different flavours of Liverpool gin and the garnish to go with them, making for a beautiful, floral display. From rose flavoured gin with edible flowers to refreshing valencian orange, fragrant lemongrass and ginger and the classic, Liverpool’s organic gin with a slice of watermelon.

Of course, Liverpool gin distillery specialises in their gin and tonic pairings and at the side of the table was an ice bucket full of flavoured tonic. Each tonic bottle was dressed with a beautifully handmade label, stating exactly which gin the tonic would be paired with. We poured basil tonic into our orange gin, hibiscus into our rose flavoured tipple and, the favourite of the evening, cucumber into our Lemongrass and Ginger. The fragrant flavours of the lemongrass were complimented with a tiny jalepeno slice that added a slight kick to the overall flavour. This, paired with the refreshing notes of cucumber tonic made it a delicious drink of several different elements – definitely one to try next time!

As well as an unbelievable selection of gin, we were also treated to an amazing sandwich selection that included traditional egg and ham rolls as well as humous wraps and even mini smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels – plenty of savoury options for two people. Next was the classic scones, soft and sweet with a super generous pot of cream – these, washed down with sips from our gin tea cups was the dream. As well as scones we also each had a generously filled jam donut lightly dusted with icing sugar – a welcome afternoon tea edition in my opinion!

Last but not least was the sweet selection that sat on the top of our afternoon tea stand. Delicate petit fours and cream-filled chocolates, this little confectionary shelf not only looked gorgeous but was the most delicious ending to our meal. From super mini coffee and chocolate flavoured cakes, to tiny pecan pies and creamy, boozy chocolates, this tier really the afternoon tea that extra special touch – just what you want when treating your mum!

We were already huge fans of Liverpool Gin Distillery, but honestly couldn’t recommend both their food and drink enough after our afternoon tea experience. From the delicious food and amazing gin through to the super friendly hospitality and the sheer effort that went into the presentation (my mum even got a card from the staff!) i can’t think of anywhere better to take your mum this Mother’s Day. Huge thanks to Liverpool Gin Distillery for such an amazing treat and if this is anything to go by, we look forward to more to come from Castle Street’s best new venue!
