Homemade Birthday Cake – Self Isolation
Celebrating a birthday during self isolation? It’s time to get creative in the kitchen. A delicious way to mark any special occasion is with a homemade birthday cake. If you have enough ingredients in your kitchen cupboards, here is our favourite Lemon drizzle cake recipe:
Lemon Drizzle Birthday Cake Recipe
- 170 g self-raising flour
- 170 g caster sugar
- 170 g butter or margarine
- 2 medium eggs
- 3 unwaxed lemons
- 4 tbsp icing sugar
- Preheat the oven to gas mark 4, or 180 centigrade and in a bowl, mix the sugar and butter until creamy.
- Once it has a creamy consistency, add the eggs and whisk well.
- Sift the flour and fold into the mixture gently.
- Add the zest of the lemons and half of the juice.
- Add the mixture to a greased cake or loaf tin and bake for 25 minutes or until bouncy to touch and golden brown.
- Meanwhile, mix the remaining juice with icing sugar until smooth.
- Make holes in the lemon cake with a skewer or thin knife but not all the way through to the bottom of the cake. Then drizzle the lemon icing over the cake.
- Allow to cool slightly and serve with a cup of tea or coffee.
- Add candles to celebrate a birthday if you have them. If not, the birthday boy or girl should have the honour of being the first to cut the cake and taste it.

Looking for easy birthday party at home ideas while self isolating in Liverpool? You can throw a fabulous self isolation birthday party at home by using your imagination and creative side. Here are some of the best birthday party ideas we’ve found online to inspire you to celebrate a self isolation birthday at home.
Movie Night Birthday Party: Transform your living room into a twinkling fairy light den with popcorn, snacks and a movie. This is a super easy to do birthday party theme and is great for all ages. We recommend putting pillows and a blanket on the floor for that super cosy vibe, adding fairy lights, making some popcorn and popping some sweets and snacks in glass jars or in cute cups to make it even more special.
Home Spa Birthday Party: This is a great birthday party idea for those who enjoy being pampered. Start with a slice of homemade lemon drizzle cake and a coffee or herbal tea. Light some candles and place them around the bathtub, or in the bathroom if you have a shower. Put some relaxing spa music on, which you can find on YouTube or on Spotify and create a spa atmosphere. Let the birthday girl or boy take a long bubble bath or relaxing shower and once finished give them a massage. You can use olive oil, body cream or any type of moisturiser. If you have a face mask you can also pop this on for another spa treatment experience. Massage their shoulders, neck and back for around 20 minutes. Work away all that self isolation stress and worry and leave them feeling truly recharged and pampered. Finish with a bottle of wine and a movie.
Garden Party Self Isolation Idea: If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, you can take your birthday celebrations outside and enjoy a bit of fresh air. If you have flowers in your garden, consider picking some fresh flowers for a homemade birthday bouquet. Prepare some fairy cakes or a homemade birthday cake, some sandwiches and a pot of tea or coffee for a homemade afternoon tea experience. Take blankets outside and enjoy a picnic or a cosy homemade afternoon tea.
Camping at Home Self Isolation: If you have a tent, put it up in your back garden or in the living room. Add fairy lights, some cushions, blankets, pillows and snacks. This simple idea is wonderful for kids too and will allow their imagination to run wild. For back garden camping, you could star gaze or enjoy roasting marshmallows. For indoor camping, add the movie night idea mentioned above to your celebrations and watch a movie while camping in your front room. If you don’t have a tent, you can make your own tent using a spare bedsheet and your washing line, like shown in the picture above.
Cupcake Decorating Self Isolation: This creative idea is great for kids and adults alike. Make a batch of cupcakes or fairy cakes and get out your food colouring, icing sugar, cupcake decorations, sweets and fresh fruit. This is so much fun and a great way to celebrate a birthday while staying at home. Plus its a delicious excuse to enjoy a cupcake or two. We got this inspiration from jenloveskev.com
